The Epic of Gilgamesh
The earliest extant work of fiction, recovered from clay tablets discovered in archaeological digs, the Epic of Gilgamesh addresses the question of the meaning of life. Gilgamesh is half human, half god, and king of a great city. In the course of the epic, he is brought to reconsider his relationships with others, and has to face his own mortality. The epic includes a flood narrative which is often compared with that in the bible, and scholars have found other biblical parallels. We will look at the various different versions of the epic and the themes raised in this first great work of epic literature.
