Teilhard de Chardin: god and evolution

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), renowned geologist, philosopher and Jesuit priest, devoted much of his career to the reconciliation between evolution and Christianity. He worked with great integrity and believed his task was to demonstrate how Christ represents a unifying spiritual force in a fragmented world. He encountered constant opposition from within the Catholic Church, such that his seminal work, Le Phénomène Humain (The English translation was published in 1959 under the unfortunate title, The Phenomenon of Man) was suppressed by the Vatican, and could only be published after his death. This seminar considers his Christian humanity, his scientific-theological legacy and the subsequent reception of his work by scientists and philosophers.
